22nd February 2007

Introduction
Over 50 people attended the first DAL meeting of the year. John Charnock announced the 2007 sponsors with Quark taking over as principle sponsor supported by SAVVIS, Pro2col, EFI, Turning Point Technologies, Kodak, Exponential-e and DuPont. A big thanks go to all these organisations, without whom we wouldn't be able to continue the DAL.

PPA Update
Jonathan Moore of Conde Nast updated the group about current PPA activity, in particular Pass4Press and Pic4Press. There is much activity taking place behind the scenes, especially in gathering feedback on the testing of profiles and accreditation. For further information please click here.

Automation and Futures
Marcus Kirby and Chris Bunnett teamed up to deliver a very interesting session. Marcus began talking about how automation is impacting the end-to-end production workflow, for a copy of his presentation click here. This led nicely to Chris and his presentation on how postscript, the internet and now mobile have effected the role of the repro house. Chris emphasised that although the prepress industry has changed dramatically, there is still a role for such organisations as long as they change their pitch to clients and effectively become super-librarians for the new wave of content. Soft Proofing Initiative Update
We are all aware that there are lots of soft proofing solutions in the industry, but adoption of this technology is very slow. This initiative hopes to encourage vendors to have a set of common fields within their products, which means that different solutions will communicate with each other rather than operating in a closed environment. The industry needs more confidence in the proofless file/ad supply process in order for uptake to increase.
There has been positive feedback from vendors, but they are wanting this to be a global initiative. DAL is in talks with similar groups throughout the world, to see if we can drive this forward together. How data is attached to a file isn't causing an issue, but what fields are included is the bone of contention. It's proving an uphill struggle, but progress is being made and DAL will keep you posted!

Next meeting
This is likely to take place in London during May 2007. If you would like to put forward and agenda items, provide feedback or recommend colleagues to attend please contact Hannah Newberry.
